UNDERRATED GEM 💎 WITH NICK DAVIDSON
Nick Davidson’s Journey from Nelson to the NCAA D2
Moved to the top of New Zealand’s South Island, Davidson’s basketball journey began at age 11, “It was actually one of my friends,” Davidson recalls. “Hey, here is a basketball…” (I) put it in the hoop…(I) fell in love with it.”
After honing his skills in the local school, Davidson transitioned to prep school in the United States. “It was the first time I was away from my family,” he says. “You try to make it out and try to get a spot in a college.”
Davidson’s impressive performance at the prep level caught the eye of several college programs. Ultimately, he chose Menlo College in California. “Coach Rooney did a great job selling it” he explains. “Also the student part as well, the major that they offer, also it is really nice area… the nicest zip code in the country”
Davidson’s time with the Nelson Giants in the New Zealand NBL was a highlight of his career. “My experience with Giants was amazing,” he says. “I even got to start in a game… it gave me the opportunity to get here.”
When asked about his funniest teammate and his memory with him, Davidson couldn’t pinpoint a specific moment. “I have to give it to Tom Ingham” he says. “Every time he drives a van, he would do the funniest thing ever, I probably sit in the front and laugh my head off the whole time.”
In a fun segment, we asked Davidson to select three teammates he would start, bench, and cut: Dan Fotu, Alex McNaught and Aston Inwood. Davidson laughed and made the difficult choice. Find out who made the cut in the full interview.
Maxton the young reporter, eager to learn from a seasoned athlete, asked Davidson for his advice and who he would pick to play in a winner-takes-all basketball tournament.
