Māori Basketball Phenom Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones Makes History as UC San Diego’s First Big West Player of the Year
The University of California San Diego’s basketball program has witnessed many standout athletes over the years, but none quite like Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones. The 6’6″ forward has not only etched his name into Tritons history by becoming the school’s first-ever Big West Conference Player of the Year, but he has also emerged as a cultural icon—bridging his Māori heritage with his relentless pursuit of excellence on the court.
From New Zealand to NCAA Dominance
Born and raised in Aotearoa, Tait-Jones’ journey to collegiate stardom was anything but conventional. After honing his skills at prep schools in Ohio with recommendations from the late great Kenny McFadden, he took a leap of faith to pursue basketball in the U.S., starting in NCAA Division II before transferring to UC San Diego as they transitioned to Division I.
His 2024-25 season was nothing short of spectacular, averaging 19.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.7 Steals per game while leading the Tritons to their most successful season in program history. His ability to blend elite scoring, defensive versatility, and leadership made him an undeniable force in the Big West. His performance earned him the Player of the Year honour.
A Tribute to Kenny Mac and the LBC Legacy
Behind every great athlete is a mentor who shaped them. For Tait-Jones, that figure was Kenny McFadden (Kenny Mac), the legendary New Zealand basketball coach who helped develop NBA star Steven Adams and countless other Polynesian talents.
Breaking Barriers for Māori and Pasifika Athletes
Tait-Jones’ success isn’t just personal—it’s a milestone for Indigenous athletes worldwide. As one of the few Māori players to reach such heights in NCAA basketball, he understands the weight of representation.
With professional aspirations on the horizon, Tait-Jones still focused on giving back: he would host basketball camps in Wellington or mentorship for young athletes.
